Originally by: zoolkhan i dont bother - just a macbooc (2.4ghz, but unsupported) just tiger and not the fancy leopard
the classic client works here - for a while (memory leak?) then it locks up entire machine it does not matter if i do anything or not, perhaps it locks up faster if i do something but also with just beeing docked a while - it will eventually lock up.
you can go and test your premium on those hi end boxes, while i continue to use bootcamp and run a native client (cedega still sucks, it is just an emulation, not native code) on windows xp - on the same box that ironically would not be supported under its own OS that it was built for by apple computer inc.
Well this one should perform BETTER than the current classic. I'll try in on my macbook air to see if there any hope of proper performance on older macbooks.
It's not native I know, but it's the best we are getting. The memory leak is a known issue. We all get it. Tabbing out and it will make it go crazy even faster.

iMac 20" 2.16GHz C2D, 2Gt Ram, Radeon X1600 256mt, OSX 10.4.11
Doesn't work. It get's stick in entering station (the one where there is that small window and all black, I guess this is the black screen thing. So no Premium for my iMac.
1st gen Macbook Air running Leopard First start: login window was normal, but after entering the game everything except the GUI was white. All white. If I rotated the "white interior" I could see a light source affecting the GUI. I undocked and same thing in space. So I docked and rebooted.
Second start: Ok, I'm seeing premium. Default values give me a steady 3.6 fps inside the station and 2-6fps in space (unplaybe and jiggy)
Ok, custom settings: 1024x768, no shadows, extreme cache 512mb. getting around 8-10fps in space.
The fps is a very stable though. I was at a gate looking at it, empty space and generally going all boners with the camera and the fps won't budge. It stays at approx 8fps. Looks nice (no problems), but performance is poor even compared to classic. Also the client feels much slower doing loggins, quits and everything else other than playing. Just feels...sluggish. Classic feels faster.

Does anyone else have a Macbook Air? Just so that we could check if the performance is the same, or is just my rig that's working poorly. I did see a topic about someone using a Macbook with X3100 and he had better performance (although it's a different cpu though, but still). |

Do you mean the premium client? I still can't use premium on my 2nd Gen iMac (C2D). It just get's stuck on "entering station" and i can hear the music and all. Classic side of the premium client seems work nicely and actually feels...snappier. Not sure if there have been any changes in it (or is it just the lack of player amounts doing it). |

OSX 10.4.11... this is your issue.. Apple has updated the drivers only in 10.5 not 10.4, upgrade already.
What a brilliant idea. So I go out and buy leopard, then wait a while and go out and buy snow leopard! Marvellous! Also I have no need to upgrade other than CCP's code because I have leopard on my laptop and it's not really bringing any "new" value to my imac if I do so.
Will premium lite (when it's released) support Tiger at all? As the HW is getting the axe... It's a rather radical move from CCP to axe both HW and OS (perhaps). |

Ok, I spent a litte more time on SiSi now. Tried to fiddle with basically everything you can fiddle and the performance on a 1st gen Air is on default stuck at 8fps. While fiddling and playing around with shadows (high quality actually raises performance) I get around 8-15fps (real jiggy though)
Shadows off and on, same fps. Window mode, fullscreen, same fps. Different resolutios, same fps. Fiddling all over, same fps. HDR on, all black. Whoops... Classic or premium...same fps. (classic does jump up and down on the fps, and i tried all the settings with similar results.
Before someone says it's a poor processor...well from what I'm looking eve is leaving 30-40% of cpu power unused. (Eve is using around 100-110%, while in space.) At station the fps is like 3-4fps, but in space 10-15fps, and in station eve leaves 50-60% of cpu and still the fps is even worse.
So Eve is farm from using the cpu efficiently, so it might be up to the GPU, but X3100 is a supported one... more coding boys :)

Well it's only my iMac, so it might be case sensitive, but overall I think us Tiger users are just calling for trouble, so my advice is to upgrade, but not now! I just hope that CCP is up to par with Snow Leopard. SW is rumored to be released in Q1 (same as Premium Lite and classic shutdown).
So I personally am planning on upgrading to Snow Leopard, not only Leopard. It's cutting close and I with that either Premium Lite works on Tiger at that time (if SW gets delayed) or if CCP is having trouble with SW (Just because it works smoothly on Leopard doesn't automatically mean it will run smooth on snow leopard). I would hate to upgrade from Tiger (on which Eve might not work) and to Snow Leopard and notice that it's not working properly on that one. Also, I'm not planning on buying two OS X versions inside a timeframe of months. |

Oh crap... is the X1600 a 128mb or 256mb? Mine is 256mb and because I have tiger...then it's not just about upgrading to leopard for me. Damn it. So this is looking a bit grim. Our imacs currently don't work in either OS versions... Stop whining. |

At least CCP said that the X1600 iMac/MBP are the basis for acceptable performance. So it should run, another thing is what is considered acceptable performance...i mean look at the state of the mac client now (not premium) and it's definitely acceptable to CCP.
Premium should run better than the current classic, but who knows if they add too much shine so that it will more efficient, but ultimately slower...
So I'm hopeful it will run on the X1600 iMac. |

I've had a few mac laptops and yes they do get hot, but I haven't had a single overheating problems (with the exception of eve). If you do the math with only ventilation sure, it shows it will burn, but remember that these machines use their cover as a heatsink (and a quite effective one).
I've done 3D rendering (GPU assisted) on full tilt on many occasions and everything was more or less running at 200% for hours. Did it get warm? Sure, did anything fail or blow up? No.
How about not keeping them laptops on fluffy carpets and cats sitting on them.
But I'm still furious with Apple. I can't use my laptop underwater. Bstards. |

You shouldn't need to upgrade it, the X3100 is SM3 capable. Of course the performance is going to blow, but it's integrated graphics, so what do you expect?
Well I'm running a X3100 on the macbook air and classic + premium are performing identically. It's a skill changing machine, but the stupid thing is that Eve is CPU hungry and thus it doesn't even use it to the max. I'm having like 40-60% of free CPU and it's free! Optimizing boys, optimizing... With that said, CCP said that premium should perform betters so it could be possible that Eve will run decently enough on these X3100 setups.
It's another matter if it's "supported", but I personally think it's a ******ed idea to make a mac client that ONLY supports like this year mac models (not even all of them), and pretty much scraps everything else. I hardly think that the mac users are all using this year models. Also, we don't change or upgrade the frigging platform every year! I understand this is different from the PC side, but why have a mac client then.
Oh well, enough of this rant. I hope the premium lite will get a significant boost in performance in the next month....hmm...actually, if it ships on March 10th with boxes also...then shouldn't they have the gold version already? Scary... Stop whining. |

Originally by: Ben Sullivan Umm now I'm confused.
I was told it was not going to work. Yeah, I see the GUI but nothing else... btw this is the beta for full premium not premium lite right? That should be fien to run...I hope
If it supports SM3 then it should "run", but that's pretty much tossing a coin and hoping for it. If it works, good, if not...well it's not supported. I still think they will try and make it run on anything that's possible. Specially when you consider that Apple sells even today a laptop, that's not on the supported list.
As for the premium to be lite or premium...no idea. I'm a bit scared that if they are only testing the premium...it would be nice to test the lite version also.
But hey, I would just go for actually to be able to run the premium one a supported machine. That's a no no at the moment for me. I would be interested in knowing what happens if I currently play with a Eve-capable Mac, then after March it's not capable anymore... any refunds or is just "adios, thanks for the subcription money untill Christmas" |
